January 5th, 2019

After our holiday break the boys couldn’t wait to get back to exploring Calgary’s food scene. The first dinner of 2019 was a great success. I decided to stick with what I know and stay in the Asian cuisine wheelhouse. I chose to take the men to Insadong Korean BBQ restaurant. This was our new member Luis’ first dinner and we were missing 2 members, Andrew who was in Montreal and Mo who canceled the week of and didn’t really have a good excuse but I digress.

I have to admit that this restaurant was also shown to me by the guide of Man’s Dinner Mr. Richard. As they say, it’s not always what you know but who you know. But unlike last time he was not present at this dinner and I ordered for the table.

We ordered two of Insadong’s BBQ Platters which came with green onion and seafood pancakes, seafood stir-fried rice cakes, kimchi, rice, Korean potatoes, and a green salad. The meat on the platter included LA ribs, Bulgogi or several types of meats, and pork belly. These platters are a great way to try several different types of meat and I would recommend to any group. Of course, this was not enough meat so I naturally ordered more pork belly. Which is arguably one of the best meats known to man. The BBQ platters were delicious but they were not the reason that I chose Insadong.

The star of the meal was the pork bone soup. If you have not tried Korean pork bone soup stop reading, get in your car and drive to 920 36 St NE, Calgary, AB immediately! I know this is a bold statement but pork bone soup is my favorite soup of all time. I have tried it at a few places in Calgary and Insadong definitely makes the best.  The soup is made using the neck of the pig which I love because I admire dishes that use parts of animals that many would throw away. The soup has a rich savory broth which unlike a lot of soups is not gritty at all. Along with the BBQ platters and the soup I also ordered Japchae aka Glass noodles which are made from sweet potatoes. They were very tasty and flavorful and helped ensure the boys would have more than enough food. Lastly, to adhere to alcohol rule, I ordered some bottles of Soju for the table. Overall Insaodng served us a great feast with great service. I can’t say enough good things about this place as it is my go-to whenever I am craving Korean food!
